Do You Need a Lawyer Or Not?

One of the most famous phrases on any cop drama is a Person asking for their lawyer.  But not all run-ins with the law lead to the need of a lawyer. There are also many different civil law issues where you will want to have a lawyer walk you through the process and some situations where you are good solo.  Here are a few examples of when you do not need a lawyer and some when you do!

No Lawyer Needed:

Traffic Ticket
We have all been there before. You get pulled over for speeding and get a ticket. Most of the time you need to pay the fee and be done with it. However, if you recognize that the points on your license will make your insurance rates go up, it may be worth talking to a lawyer to reduce the charges to a non-moving offense.

Small Claims Court
These issues for two parties disputing a small amount of money. The actual cap on it is decided state to state. The two parties come and tell their side of the story, and a judge chooses the ruling. You’ve most likely seen something similar on People Court or Judge Judy.

Speak with a Lawyer:

Wrongful Termination or Harassment in the Workplace
There are many state and federal laws at play here with harassment or wrongful termination suits. A lawyer can help you walk through that process and ensure that any injustices done are answered. You can also be sure that the opposing side will have legal representation, so having your lawyer makes sense.

Personal Injury
If you have been injured in a situation that was not your fault, there is a good chance that a lawyer will be able to help you. However, how the injury happened makes a big difference in the law’s approach. Was it premise liability, was it car accident where the other driver is to blame? A lawyer can help you walk through these processes and ensure that your care is the focus.

Criminal charges
This may be the most obvious of options on this list. However, a lawyer is present at all criminal charges to ensure that your rights are adequately handled regardless of your innocence or guilt.
