[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Common Summer InjuriesSummer is a time for fun and friends, but with all the summer fun, it is important to consider common summer injuries that could occur in places that are often visited when the months get warmer and the nights seem longer. In this blog, Raynes | Erickson will be talking about unique places where injuries could happen in the summer and why such places are susceptible to causing injuries during the summer. We will also consider how to avoid them in addition to what you can do if you are a victim of a common summer injury at one of these frequently-visited summer spots.

Regarding common summer injuries, we will be considering injuries that occur specifically on public sites, not on a residential property such as a home or apartment building; if you get injured on a property that is not your own, you might have a premises liability claim. This refers to the responsibility of a property owner or manager to take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of a property. If the safety of that property is not maintained and injury or death results from that neglectful circumstance, then the owner or party responsible for the property can be held accountable.

Often premise liability claims are filed for “slip and fall” incidents. Still, knowing what injuries commonly occur during summer could be beneficial, whether it is by the fault of a property owner or not.

Places That Are Susceptible To Causing Injuries During The Summer

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Some places become more popular during the summer months. These same places that people visit during the summer might also be an easy target for a high number of injuries. What are these places and what makes them high-risk for causing injuries during the summer?

Beaches. Heavily populated with children, adults, and animals alike, the beach is one of the most popular hot spots during the summer. This is an opportune place for people to bask in the sun, walk along the shore, stick their toes in the sand, and relax. However, there are some dangers associated with the beach that increase during the summer.

Aside from the large number of people that crowd the beaches, injuries such as cuts are common at the beach, particularly on the bottom of the feet. Shells and rocks can create deep cuts that may require cleaning and stitching. While saltwater is known to heal, on the contrary, you could contract an infection from bacteria present in the water.

You should also beware of injuries caused by running in the sand. The sand is rarely consistent with a smooth surface. The notorious beach sand slip-and-fall injury can result in ankle sprains and sprains in the knee the ligaments.

How to avoid common summer injuries at the beach: Consider wearing shoes or sandals. Having a first aid kit available could come in handy in the event that you need to clean out and protect injuries from further damage.

Amusement parks. Amusement parks are popular throughout the year in Southern California, but activity boosts during the summer. The roller coasters, bumper cars, Ferris wheels, and water slides are just a few examples of the various attractions that make people flock to amusement parks during the summer. Yet, with these attractions come inevitable dangers.

Visitors sustain injuries ranging from bumps and bruises to serious brain injuries and broken bones. In some cases, amusement park injuries may result in death. The most common injuries people experience at an amusement park are broken bones and fractures or serious brain and head injuries, including concussions and traumatic brain injuries.

Such injuries are often a result of the following: Slip and fall accidents caused by slippery surfaces, tripping hazards, and other dangerous conditions; passenger misuse and reckless behavior; the inherent danger of the ride, such as a roller coaster that causes the person to be whipped around in numerous directions at a fast pace.

How to avoid common summer injuries at amusement parks: Pay attention to your surroundings, act in a way that promotes safety, and consider what rides you want to engage in before entering.

Outdoor activities. Whether this involves hiking, the river, camping, or more, outdoor activities are a fan favorite during the summer! Of course, though, the outdoors come with its fair share of dangers.

Similar to the beach, blisters, bug bites, and cuts are common injuries that people experience while hiking. Taking a trip to the river is unique because water is involved; drowning and near-drowning, major impact injuries such as head injuries, slip, trip, and fall injuries (including bone fracture and breaks), and cuts, lesions and punctures are all injuries associated with trips to the river. Wounds and infections, burns, and knee & ankle injuries are often experienced while camping.

How to avoid common summer injuries while outdoors: Explore with caution! We will not say avoid the outdoors, because most of us love the outdoors. But the first thing you could do whenever you are about to hike, go to the river, or camp is to start your adventure with caution. Keep your eyes open for items that may trip you on a trail or stuff in the water that might be dangerous.

Movie theatres. Watching a film in the movie theater is both more immersive and more communal than watching it at home. There are no household distractions, and yet there are people around to engulf you in their gasps and laughter during a film. Then there’s the big screen, sound system, and smell of popcorn. Add in the warm nights and you have a full-blown summer experience.

But falling objects such as lightbulbs, tiles, movie posters, and other cinematic ornaments are not always properly fastened. If they are not, they can fall on a customer and cause serious injury. Likewise, rust, loose tiles, flimsy carpeting, proper parking lot, entrance, emergency exits, and more could cause slip-and-fall injuries. Not to mention the dark setting of a movie theater could cause improper sight or a lack of sight when it comes to objects in the way and missteps.

How to avoid common summer injuries in a movie theater: Slow down and be aware of your surroundings. Due to the dim lighting of a movie theater, it is important to pay more attention than usual to where you are stepping and what is around you. Granted, you might not be able to stop falling objects within the theater, but you can avoid them if you keep your eyes open and remain alert.
